Ironbound Summer, 2024/25
film,
5 min

“Ironbound Summer” is a nonfiction animated short film constructed from recorded conversations with my grandmother, recalling fond childhood memories of the summers of her youth. The film captures a portrait of a moment in time, in experiences recalled. In the same way, it serves as a preservation and archiving of precious memory and experience so as for it not to be lost to time. Created utilizing a rotoscoping technique, the narrative is illustrated through simplified and pared-down, gestural, almost vaporous animations which wisp in and out of frame like visual representations of fragments of memory. The technique of rotoscoping lends a feel of realism and a sense of grounding to the animations, almost as if providing the sense of memories being recalled or recaptured in visuals illustrating the oral history. Introduced through the lens of my own personal experience, the film serves not only as a documentary exploration of mine and my grandmother’s personal histories, but as a nostalgic ode to a childhood - a form of alternative monument built through oral storytelling and the preservation of memory.
